Absolute eosinophil count & hypereosinophilia grading

Computes the absolute eosinophil count from WBC × eosinophil%, and grades eosinophilia / hypereosinophilia per consensus thresholds.

Formula / logic

AEC = WBC × eosinophil%. Grading: <0.5 ×10⁹/L normal; 0.5-1.5 mild eosinophilia; ≥1.5 ×10⁹/L hypereosinophilia (1.5-5 moderate, >5 marked). Hypereosinophilia requires AEC ≥1.5 ×10⁹/L on two occasions ≥1 month apart (or tissue HE). Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) = HE + attributable end-organ damage.

Interpretation

Note unit equivalence: 500 cells/µL = 0.5 ×10⁹/L. Thresholds misfire by 1000× if cells/µL and ×10⁹/L are confused.
