Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI)

Clinician-scored atopic dermatitis severity across 4 body regions (signs × area × region weight). Range 0-72.

Evidence tier: Validated instrument.

Formula / logic

For each of 4 regions: region score = (erythema + induration/papulation + excoriation + lichenification, each 0-3) × area score (0-6) × region multiplier. Multipliers (≥8 y): head/neck 0.1, upper limbs 0.2, trunk 0.3, lower limbs 0.4. (<8 y): head/neck 0.2, upper 0.2, trunk 0.3, lower 0.3. EASI = sum of region scores (0-72).

Interpretation

Severity strata vary across the literature; the mild/moderate/severe cut-points shown (~≤7 / ~7-21 / >21) are commonly used approximations, not part of the original instrument.
