Anaphylaxis clinical diagnostic criteria (NIAID/FAAN 2006)

Anaphylaxis is highly likely when any ONE of three clinical criteria is fulfilled.

Formula / logic

Anaphylaxis is highly likely when any ONE is fulfilled: (1) acute skin/mucosal involvement AND respiratory compromise OR reduced BP/end-organ dysfunction; (2) ≥2 of {skin/mucosa, respiratory, reduced BP, persistent GI} rapidly after a LIKELY allergen; (3) reduced BP after a KNOWN allergen (age-specific hypotension or >30% systolic drop).

Interpretation

The criteria are ~95% sensitive. A negative result does not exclude anaphylaxis, when in doubt, give epinephrine.
